The Central Coast has beaches, waterfront towns, bushwalks and national parks within easy reach of Sydney.

I’ve explored every place in this guide many times. Some suit a relaxed beach day. Others are better for walking, cafés or family attractions.

Terrigal and Avoca Beach are my top choices for a first visit. Bouddi National Park is best if you want to spend most of the day walking.

Which Central Coast Day Trip Should You Choose?

Best first visit: Terrigal and Avoca Beach
Best for families: The Entrance
Best for cafés and shopping: Long Jetty
Best for calm waterfront scenery: Ettalong Beach
Best for walking: Bouddi National Park
Best quiet village: Patonga
Best landmark: Norah Head Lighthouse
Best short nature trip: Somersby Falls

1. Terrigal

Terrigal is my top choice for a first Central Coast day trip.

Start near Terrigal Beach and walk along the esplanade towards Terrigal Haven. From there, the path continues around the headland to The Skillion.

Cafés and restaurants sit close to the beach. Terrigal also has more shops and evening dining than the smaller coastal villages.

Terrigal is about 90 minutes from Sydney by car.

2. Avoca Beach

Avoca Beach combines a surf beach, rockpool, lake and village cafés.

Families often spend time around the rockpool and playground at the southern end. Aquafun hires kayaks, paddleboards and pedal boats from Avoca Lake.

The historic Avoca Beach Picture Theatre sits close to the beach. Avoca Beachside Markets are held at Heazlett Park on the fourth Sunday of each month.

Avoca Beach is about 15 minutes from Terrigal, so the two places work well together.

3. The Entrance

The Entrance sits where Tuggerah Lake meets the ocean.

Memorial Park has waterfront paths, children’s rides and the historic carousel. Vera’s Water Garden is nearby.

Pelican Time runs at 3.30 pm on selected days. The Tuggerah Lake shared path also connects The Entrance with Long Jetty.

The Entrance is about one hour and 40 minutes from Sydney.

4. Long Jetty

Long Jetty is known for lakeside sunsets, independent cafés, vintage shops and street art.

The suburb takes its name from the 351-metre jetty stretching into Tuggerah Lake. Two shorter jetties sit nearby.

Start your day with coffee and a browse through the shops. Then walk out along the jetty before following the lakeside path to The Entrance for the afternoon.

Long Jetty is about one hour and 40 minutes from Sydney.

5. Ettalong Beach

Ettalong Beach has calm bay water, a foreshore walk and a compact village centre.

Cafés, restaurants and weekend markets sit within walking distance of the waterfront. The Palm Beach ferry also reaches Ettalong through Wagstaffe.

Ettalong works well for a relaxed day around the water. It’s about 90 minutes from Sydney by car or 30 minutes by ferry from Palm Beach.

6. Patonga Beach

Patonga is a quiet waterfront village between Brisbane Water National Park and the Hawkesbury River.

The beach, creek, wharf and campground sit close together. The Boathouse Hotel overlooks the water near the ferry wharf.

Patonga also connects with Pearl Beach through the national park. Ferries travel between Patonga and Palm Beach.

Patonga is about 90 minutes from Sydney by car.

7. Pearl Beach

Pearl Beach is a small village surrounded by bushland.

The beach has an ocean pool at its southern end. The Pearl Beach Arboretum and nearby walking tracks give you more places to explore away from the water.

Pearl Beach feels quieter than Terrigal or Avoca Beach. Spend the morning exploring the village and arboretum, then drive to Patonga for lunch and a stroll along the waterfront.

Pearl Beach is about 90 minutes from Sydney by car.

8. Bouddi National Park

Bouddi National Park is my top day trip for coastal walking.

The full Bouddi Coastal Walk runs 8.5 kilometres one way, from Putty Beach to Macmasters Beach. Set aside 3½ to 4½ hours. You’ll need transport back unless you’re keen to walk the return leg too.

Want something shorter? Walk from Putty Beach to Gerrin Point Lookout and back the same way. It’s about 2.4 kilometres return, with some steps along the track.

Putty Beach also has a picnic area, campground and toilets.

9. Norah Head Lighthouse

Norah Head Lighthouse has stood above the coast since 1903.

Lighthouse tours climb 96 stairs to the top of the tower. Paths around the reserve also give you wide ocean views without joining a tour.

Soldiers Beach sits on one side of the headland, and Cabbage Tree Harbour, home to an ocean rockpool, sits on the other.

Norah Head is about one hour and 45 minutes from Sydney.

10. Somersby Falls

Somersby Falls suits a short waterfall walk and a picnic, with time to explore another nearby stop afterwards.

The 800-metre return track passes lookouts across three levels of cascading waterfalls. The picnic area has tables, barbecues and toilets.

The falls are most impressive after steady rain. Somersby Falls is about five minutes from the M1 near Gosford.

Allow 30 to 40 minutes for the walk, plus extra time for photos or a picnic stop. The track has steps, so wear proper shoes, and park entry fees apply.

My Pick for Your First Central Coast Day Trip

Start the morning at Terrigal Beach. Walk to Terrigal Haven and climb The Skillion for views along the coast.

Have lunch near the beach. Then drive to Avoca Beach for the afternoon.

At Avoca, you can explore the beach and rockpool or spend time around the lake. The two towns are only about 15 minutes apart.

This trip gives you two very different Central Coast beach towns without spending most of the day driving.

Plan your Terrigal-Avoca trip.
