What North Avoca Beach Is Like

North Avoca shares its long stretch of sand with Avoca Beach, but it feels much quieter.

The area is mostly residential and has fewer cafés, shops, or tourist facilities than nearby towns. This means the beach usually feels more open and less crowded.

The beach sits between two sandstone headlands and faces east to southeast, so it gets steady waves from the open ocean.

This exposure brings good surf conditions but can also cause rips. Because of this, always swim between the flags during patrol season.

North Avoca vs. Avoca Beach

  • North Avoca: Quiet streets, punchy surf, dog-friendly, single local café vibe.
  • Main Avoca: Family rock pool, lagoon hire, many restaurants and historic cinema.

Swimming and Surfing at North Avoca Beach

North Avoca is a popular surfing beach with consistent waves. If you’re swimming, the beach is patrolled from the September school holidays to late April. Swim between the red and yellow flags, as waves and rips can be strong.

Walk Your Dog

Dogs can run off leash on the southern end of North Avoca Beach. The off-leash area starts at the beach access at the end of View Street. It continues south to the mouth of Avoca Lagoon and across to the Shark Tower on the Avoca Beach side.

Rock Platforms and Natural Splash Areas

At low tide, explore the natural rock platforms at both ends of North Avoca Beach. You’ll find shallow pools where children enjoy looking for crabs, shells and other marine life. Visit when the sea is calm and stay well back from the water during rough surf, as waves can sweep across the rocks.

Beach Walk

North Avoca Beach is a great place for a coastal walk. You can walk south along the sand to Avoca Beach. Or head north before climbing the headland to Terrigal. North Avoca is also part of the annual 5 Lands Walk, which links five beaches between Macmasters Beach and Terrigal.

Stop For Coffee and Food

If you’re looking for coffee or breakfast, head to The Boy & The Rose. We often stop here when we’re in North Avoca. The bacon and egg rolls are a favourite, and the breakfast burritos are also worth trying. The relaxed local café is a nice place to start your day or take a break after the beach.

Parking

Park in the North Avoca Surf Life Saving Club car park on View Street for the easiest access to the beach. You can also find free street parking along View Street and nearby roads. If you’re visiting on a weekend or public holiday, arrive early as parking fills quickly.
