The Palm Beach Ferry is the most scenic way to travel between Palm Beach, Ettalong and Wagstaffe. Instead of an hour’s drive, the crossing takes about 30 minutes across open water with views of Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Lion Island and three national parks along the way.
Sometimes the ride can get a bit bumpy when the ferry crosses the open seas, but it’s a pleasant trip.
Travelling from Palm Beach to Ettalong
A tip if you’re a traveller or day tripper: From Sydney, take the ferry to Manly, then catch the 199 bus to Palm Beach. Then embark on the ferry to Ettalong. And take the train from Woy Woy back to Sydney. The train trip is quite scenic too.
If you’re driving, the ferry wharf is located at 1151 Barrenjoey Rd. Parking in the area can be difficult. It can get jam-packed so allow plenty of time to find parking. There’s a paid parking area just beside the wharf. Or you can park for free along Barrenjoey Rd or Iluka Rd.
Try to arrive at the ferry wharf early. During the peak holiday period, the ferry can get packed. And you may need extra time to find an off-street parking spot.
Before embarking on the ferry, you might enjoy checking out the cute shops along Barrenjoey Rd before you catch the ferry.
A visitor information centre sits across the road from the ferry departure if you need more information.
When you get to Ettalong, take it easy. Walk along Ettalong Beach, pick up a quick bite from the Ettalong Beach Market or a local café, and relax by the water. Maybe head over to Umina Beach for a longer walk, and head back whenever you feel like it.
Travelling from Palm Beach to Wagstaffe
Get off at Wagstaffe if you want to explore Bouddi National Park by walking.
From Wagstaffe, you can walk to Lobster Beach, which is both secluded and popular. The path begins near High View Road and goes through bushland, with some steps and uneven ground. The walk isn’t long, but it’s a real bush track, so give yourself some time and wear good shoes.
If you want a longer walk, follow the Flannel Flower Walking Track toward Box Head. This path links to other tracks with coastal views, or you can keep going all the way to Killcare.
Travelling from Ettalong to Palm Beach
The Ettalong Wharf is located on Ferry Rd. You’ll be able to find off-street parking a bit further away. We usually find a spot along Booker Bay Rd or Murray St. You should be able to find a parking spot at no more than a couple minutes’ walk to the wharf.
When you get to Palm Beach, you can walk up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse if you feel like a short climb. After that, take some time to explore Palm Beach and enjoy a coffee by the wharf or the ocean. If you have young children, stay on the calm side of Pittwater where the water is flat.

Is the Palm Beach Ferry Worth It?
The Palm Beach Ferry is an easy way to take a day trip between Sydney and the Central Coast. It’s great for couples, families, or anyone looking for a simple outing with nice water views and a laid-back spot to visit.
It’s a good choice if you want a scenic ride and a relaxed place to eat, walk, or swim once you get there.
It may not be worth it on very busy weekends, windy days when the crossing is rough, or if you’re expecting lots of activities beyond a relaxed coastal stop.
