It’s hard to believe somewhere that relaxed is only 90 minutes from Sydney. I keep coming back to Ettalong Beach because it’s one of the few places where I genuinely switch off.

Ettalong is a small waterfront village on the southern end of the Central Coast, right on Broken Bay. There’s no rush, no big crowds, and no pressure to do anything. People stroll along the foreshore, sit at cafés overlooking the water, catch the ferry to Palm Beach, or simply watch the boats drift by.

It has this laid-back atmosphere that’s becoming harder to find, and somehow every visit feels a little like a holiday, even if you’re only there for the afternoon.

Thinking about heading to Ettalong but not sure what to expect? Here’s what you need to know.

Is Ettalong Worth Visiting?

Ettalong is best known for:

Unlike Terrigal or Avoca, Ettalong isn’t a surf town.

The water is usually calm, the village is compact, and most places are within walking distance.

Instead of chasing beach bars and activities, you’ll find yourself wandering along the foreshore, browsing the markets, or sitting at a waterfront café for longer than you planned.

If you’re looking for somewhere to switch off, Ettalong is one of the most relaxing towns on the Central Coast.

Ettalong appeals most to people who enjoy quieter coastal towns. Families like the calm water and foreshore playground, couples enjoy the waterfront dining and ferry trips, and day-trippers often come for the relaxed atmosphere.

If your ideal beach day involves surf breaks, nightlife and lots of action, you’ll probably prefer somewhere like Terrigal. But if you’re happy with calm water, scenic walks, good cafés and a slower pace, Ettalong is hard to beat.

About Ettalong

The area was originally home to the Darkinjung people, who lived from the rich waters and bushland of the region. The name Ettalong comes from a Darkinjung word meaning “drinking water”. It refers to a freshwater source near the shoreline.

European settlers arrived in the early 1800s. They made a living through timber cutting, fishing and farming. The arrival of the railway at nearby Woy Woy in 1889 made the region more accessible. The railway helped transform Ettalong into a popular holiday destination.

During the twentieth century, Ettalong grew from a small fishing village into a popular coastal town. The Palm Beach ferry, weekend markets, cafés and waterfront made Ettalong a popular getaway from Sydney.

Despite its growth, Ettalong has retained its laid-back character.

How Much Time Do You Need in Ettalong?

Ettalong works best as a day trip, although it’s easy to turn it into a weekend away.

If you’re short on time, a few hours is enough to walk the foreshore, grab lunch by the water and browse the markets. A full day gives you time to catch the ferry to Palm Beach and enjoy the relaxed pace that makes Ettalong special.

If you’re staying overnight, Ettalong also makes a good base for exploring the southern Central Coast. You can visit Bouddi National Park, Brisbane Water National Park and the nearby beachside villages.

How to Spend a Day in Ettalong

Start with breakfast near the waterfront. Then walk along the foreshore and spend some time at the beach.

Browse Ettalong Markets and have lunch in the village. In the afternoon, catch the ferry to Palm Beach or watch a film at Cinema Paradiso.

Finish with dinner beside the water.

Winter is much quieter, making it a good time for scenic walks, café hopping and relaxing by the waterfront.

If you’d like to experience Ettalong at its liveliest, visit on a weekend when the Ettalong Markets are open and the village is at its busiest.
