Terrigal and Avoca Beach make a great first Central Coast day trip from Sydney.
Start with the coastal walk and cafés at Terrigal. Then spend the afternoon around Avoca Beach, the rockpool and Avoca Lake.
The two towns are only about 15 minutes apart. This gives you plenty to explore without spending most of the day driving.

Morning in Terrigal
Start Near Terrigal Beach
Arrive in Terrigal during the morning and start near the beach.
The Esplanade has cafés, restaurants and shops facing the water. You can have coffee here before walking towards Terrigal Haven.
Wilson Road multi-storey car park offers free parking a few streets back from the beach.
Walk to Terrigal Haven
Follow the waterfront past Terrigal Beach and along the boardwalk to Terrigal Haven.
The Haven feels quieter than the town centre. Fishing boats, grassy areas and calm water sit below the headland.
Continue around the reserve towards The Skillion.
Climb The Skillion
The Skillion rises above Terrigal Haven.
A steep staircase leads to the lookout. From the top, you can see Avoca Beach to the south and Wamberal and Forresters Beach to the north.
It’s also one of Terrigal’s best whale-watching places between May and November.
Lunch in Terrigal
Terrigal has the widest choice of places to eat on this trip.
Most cafés and restaurants sit along The Esplanade or close to Terrigal Haven. You can choose a quick café lunch or stay longer at one of the waterfront restaurants.
Afternoon at Avoca Beach
Drive south from Terrigal to Avoca Beach. The trip usually takes about 15 minutes.
Avoca feels smaller and more relaxed than Terrigal. The beach, lake, cafés and theatre are all close together.
Explore the Southern End of the Beach
Start near the southern end of Avoca Beach.
This area has the rockpool, playground and cafés close to the sand. The rock platform also gives you views along the beach towards North Avoca.
The rockpool is shallow and protected from the larger waves.
Spend Time Around Avoca Lake
Avoca Lake sits behind the beach and village.
You can walk beside the lake or hire a kayak, paddleboard or pedal boat from Aquafun Avoca Lake.
The lake gives Avoca Beach a different feel from Terrigal. You can move between the lake, beach and cafés without driving again.
Visit Avoca Beach Theatre
Avoca Beach Theatre has operated since 1948.
The family-run theatre shows new films, independent films and live events. It’s a good afternoon option when a session fits your day.
The theatre sits on Avoca Drive near the lake and beach.
If You Visit on Market Day
Avoca Beachside Markets are held at Heazlett Park on the fourth Sunday of each month.
The market has food, clothing, art, homewares and live music beside Avoca Lake.
Market mornings are much busier than a normal Sunday.

Morning: Terrigal Beach, the boardwalk, Terrigal Haven and The Skillion
Lunch: Terrigal Esplanade or Terrigal Haven
Early afternoon: Avoca Beach and rockpool
Later afternoon: Avoca Lake or Avoca Beach Theatre
You can shorten the day by visiting Terrigal in the morning and spending only a few hours at Avoca Beach.
Getting There from Sydney
Terrigal is about 90 minutes north of Sydney via the M1 and Central Coast Highway.
Avoca Beach is about 15 minutes south of Terrigal. From Avoca, the return drive to Sydney usually takes around 90 minutes.
Travel times increase during busy weekends and holiday periods.
